How to Renew your Mexican Temporary Student Resident Card

A year has passed and it’s finally time to renew your Temporary Student Resident Card (TSRC)!

Luckily, you’ve done this before so the second time around won’t be as hard. That being said, let’s get right to it.

Preface:

  • This process can be done as early as 30 days before your expiration date.
  • If your Resident Card expires while you are out of the country (as in, over winter break or summer break) and you will be gone before you reach the 30 day mark to renew:
    • The “deadline” is within 5 business days of your return with an expired Temporary Student Resident Card. However, I was told that the appointment had to be made within the 5 days; NOT attended within those 5 days.
      • Take this statement with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, I received different information from both INM offices (GDL & PV) and the school (UAG); At the time of my application, this information varied significantly due to Covid. I was a little late to renew, but they allowed me to anyways!
    • To be safe, if you know you will miss your 30 day window, schedule your appointment before you leave for break to ensure you get it within the 5 business days of your return.
    • When in doubt, call the INM office.

Fill out the Solicitude de Trámite en línea:

Day of the appointment:

What’s the big deal here?!

The TRAFFIC!

It’s been a year and you know how crazy the traffic can get during rush hour. The normal 20 minute drive from ICB campus to the INM building can take up to 45 minutes in heavy traffic.

Address INM Guadalajara: Alcalde no. 500 Planta Principal Palacio Federal, Colonia Centro, C.P. 44280 Guadalajara, Jalisco

Arrive at least 10 minutes early. When you enter, exchange your ID for a number and head into the immigration office – Up the stairs from the entrance, to the left, hang a right towards the courtyard. Once you hit the courtyard, the immigration office will be on your left.

Step 1: Packet drop off

When you enter the building you will stop by the information desk. They will direct you to the correct window on the right hand side. You will sit and wait until your name is called. Once called, they will ask for your document packet and passport. After submission and validation they will move you over to biometrics and designate a window for you (Left side of the room).

Step 2: Biometrics

Wait patiently and keep an ear open for your name. This part can take a while. Once you are called up to the window, the teller will take your fingerprints, ask for a signature and take your photo for the ID card.

DO NOT wear earrings, facial piercings etc. You will be asked to take them off prior to the photo.

After the photos are taken, you will return to your seat until they call your name for you to pick up your renewed Temporary Student Resident Card.

On your way out don’t forget to return your number and pick up your ID.

That’s it, you now have your renewed Temporary Student Resident Card!

A couple of things to know:

  • All official paperwork in Mexico MUST be filled out with BLUE ink. This is a weird quirk, but easy enough to execute. Leave the black pen behind and fill everything out with blue. This way there is no opportunity for error.
  • I highly recommend making blank copies of everything you filled out by hand. This way you can easily fix the issue without leaving the building and quickly get back in line.
  • If your paperwork is not correct and you don’t have extras, there is a Copy & Print store right outside the entrance of the INM. They have computers there where you can access any online forms and fill them out again. You can also send photos and/or documents to their WhatsApp and they will print for you.
  • Take some cash with you to pay for any extra prints you may need.
  • The INM office closes strictly at 3pm. They WILL NOT let you re-enter even if you had been there earlier in the day for an appointment. If you end up having to go back another day to finish the process, make sure you understand, BEFORE YOU LEAVE for the day, when and where you return to and if you have to make another appointment. Be persistent and remain informed.
  • If you are already inside the INM building waiting for your biometrics processing and photo, they will finish the process for you even if they close during that time.
